Come Dream With US!
Punxsutawney's history reaches back over 190 years. The Native Americans used Punxsutawney as a village long before the first settlers of European ancestry arrived in 1818.
The first industry in the area was lumbering. Within 50 years the lumber industry was in decline and the next industrial wave was that of coal. Coal and related industries of railroads, coke and iron created an economic boom which lasted from the 1880's through the 1950's.
During the early 1900's, one hundred years ago, it appeared that Punxsutawney was destined to be the industrial center of Western Pennsylvania. The original headquarters for the boom was located in the building pictured below. It was from this building, the modest office of the Punxsutawney Coal and Iron Company, that the beginning of the multi=million dollar coal industry was first managed.
Today, Punxsutawney begins a new era of economic activity, tourism. This building will become a Memorial to those who worked in our Coal and Related Industries and a Welcome Center for the thousands of visitors who come to Punxsutawney each year. P R I D E is leading the effort to restore this historic building to use.
The building, which has not been in active use for about twenty years, will be moved to a new location and restored for use. Visitors coming to Punxsutawney will be able to find information on places to see, local activities, and the resources available for their enjoyment while visiting the area.
In addition, visitors will find a memorial which pays tribute to those who worked in coal and related industries in the Punxsutawney area. The Welcome Center will provide space for the Punxsutawney Historical and Genealogical Society to set up displays of artifacts from the coal and related industries. The building will house the stories of the mines and mining communities, highlighting their unique contributions to the history of the Punxsutawney area.
A project of this magnitude requires vision and the resources to make it happen. P R I D E has assembled a group of visionaries who have been working to secure a suitable site for the building. The challenges ahead are the relocation and rehabilitation of the building.
